Abstract
Bringing together sources in the fields of psychology, cultural anthropology, and human geography, this research explores the potential of place-based music to increase place attachment and motivate a deeper sense of responsibility toward the natural world. Music is a uniquely powerful emotional and moral medium of communication about places and the environment. As such, it may be an important tool for increasing attention to and care for place in an age of environmental crisis, extractivism, and increasing “placelessness.” This research uses ethnographic methods (including surveys, interviews, participant observation, and an analysis of song lyrics and YouTube comments on songs) to explore how place-based music plays a role in shaping values, attitudes, relationships, and behavior related to places.
