Abstract

Community Engagement for the Children’s Theatre examines how children’s theatres across the United States build and sustain mutually beneficial relationships with their surrounding communities. In a field where community support is essential, but resources are often limited, long-term success depends on meaningful, reciprocal engagement. This research draws on surveys and interviews with theatre professionals to investigate strategies used by organizations of varying sizes to connect with local audiences, educators, and families. Findings highlight key practices such as sharing resources, aligning programming with community needs, valuing both internal and external stakeholders, and maintaining transparent, ongoing communication. By consolidating these insights, the study offers adaptable engagement models designed to help children’s theatres foster trust, relevance, and long-term sustainability within their communities. Ultimately, this thesis provides a practical framework for theatres seeking to not only grow their audience but to deepen their impact through collaborative, community-centered approaches.
